Our chapter is named after Commodore Lawrence Kearny,
who, as a young lieutenant, displayed his professionalism and initiative.

In 1821, he commanded the brig Enterprise
as a member of the U.S. Navy West India Company.
It sailed the Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico to suppress pirates and smugglers,
who were attacking merchant ships.

November 12, 1821, in a written communiqu he reported,
"...we had the fortune to capture four piratical Schooners and a Sloop...."

As a soldier diplomat in 1840, he was given command of the East India Squadron,
with directions to protect American interests in China.

His efforts led to the beginning of the Open Door Policy in China.
