{"id":6,"date":"2014-03-02T15:10:59","date_gmt":"2014-03-02T15:10:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/fssdar.com\/Clearwater\/?page_id=6"},"modified":"2025-03-06T10:11:55","modified_gmt":"2025-03-06T15:11:55","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/fssdar.com\/Clearwater\/history\/","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 data-start=\"132\" data-end=\"167\"><strong data-start=\"136\" data-end=\"165\">Clearwater Chapter, NSDAR<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"169\" data-end=\"569\">The <strong data-start=\"173\" data-end=\"195\">Clearwater Chapter<\/strong> in <strong data-start=\"199\" data-end=\"218\">Pinellas County<\/strong> was organized on <strong data-start=\"236\" data-end=\"254\">April 18, 1932<\/strong>, through the dedicated efforts of our first Regent, <strong data-start=\"307\" data-end=\"334\">Mrs. Samuel Graham Webb<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"340\" data-end=\"362\">15 Charter Members<\/strong>. When the downtown <strong data-start=\"382\" data-end=\"408\">Clearwater Post Office<\/strong> was built in 1933, a cornerstone box was placed within its structure, containing a list of the Charter Members and current officers of the Clearwater Chapter:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><strong data-start=\"573\" data-end=\"583\">Regent:<\/strong>\u00a0Mrs. Samuel Graham Webb<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"614\" data-end=\"629\">Vice Regent: <\/strong>Mrs. Julius D. Dreher<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"658\" data-end=\"670\">Chaplain: <\/strong>Mrs. Newton A. Hamman<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"699\" data-end=\"722\">Recording Secretary: <\/strong>Mrs. John S. Wells<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"748\" data-end=\"775\">Corresponding Secretary: <\/strong>Mrs. W.E. Campbell<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"801\" data-end=\"814\">Treasurer: <\/strong>Mrs. Samuel Mulloy<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"840\" data-end=\"853\">Registrar: <\/strong>Mrs. Hamden H. Baskin<br \/>\n<strong data-start=\"882\" data-end=\"895\">Historian: <\/strong>Mrs. Drury James Gill<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"923\" data-end=\"976\"><strong data-start=\"927\" data-end=\"974\">Preserving History Through Historic Markers<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"978\" data-end=\"1221\">Some of the primary objectives of the <strong data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1025\">NSDAR<\/strong> are to mark historic sites and preserve our nation\u2019s rich heritage. The <strong data-start=\"1098\" data-end=\"1120\">Clearwater Chapter<\/strong> remains actively involved in identifying and commemorating significant locations in our community.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1223\" data-end=\"1486\">We have proudly placed, and continue to work on, notable historic markers throughout Clearwater. One of our ongoing projects includes an <strong data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1382\">America 250 Marker<\/strong> at <strong data-start=\"1386\" data-end=\"1405\">Crest Lake Park<\/strong>, honoring the <strong data-start=\"1420\" data-end=\"1483\">patriots and families who fought for America\u2019s independence<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1728\">Among our most distinguished NSDAR Daughters is <strong data-start=\"1536\" data-end=\"1561\">Abbey Crawford Milton<\/strong>, a trailblazing advocate for <strong data-start=\"1591\" data-end=\"1611\">women\u2019s suffrage<\/strong>. In recognition of her contributions, we have placed a <strong data-start=\"1667\" data-end=\"1688\">historical marker<\/strong> at her <strong data-start=\"1696\" data-end=\"1725\">gravesite in Sylvan Abbey<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1730\" data-end=\"1959\">Additionally, our chapter has marked the <strong data-start=\"1771\" data-end=\"1799\">Belleview-Biltmore Hotel<\/strong>, an iconic landmark of local history, and contributed to the restoration of the <strong data-start=\"1880\" data-end=\"1920\">McMullen Family\u2019s historic log cabin<\/strong>, the oldest of its kind in the area.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1961\" data-end=\"2096\">Through these efforts, we proudly uphold our mission to <strong data-start=\"2017\" data-end=\"2093\">preserve and celebrate the stories of those who shaped our nation\u2019s past<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2098\" data-end=\"2146\"><strong data-start=\"2102\" data-end=\"2144\">Contributions to Heritage Preservation<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2148\" data-end=\"2326\">During <strong data-start=\"2155\" data-end=\"2168\">1976-1978<\/strong>, <strong data-start=\"2170\" data-end=\"2199\">Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rives<\/strong> furnished the parlor in one of the historical homes relocated to the <strong data-start=\"2269\" data-end=\"2323\">Pinellas County Historical Society\u2019s Heritage Park<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2328\" data-end=\"2603\">In <strong data-start=\"2331\" data-end=\"2339\">1993<\/strong>, our chapter further contributed to <strong data-start=\"2376\" data-end=\"2396\">Heritage Village<\/strong> by adding furnishings and later renewing the parlor, presenting a <strong data-start=\"2463\" data-end=\"2471\">flag<\/strong>, and <strong data-start=\"2477\" data-end=\"2504\">donating a new flagpole<\/strong>. Some of our members have also served as <strong data-start=\"2546\" data-end=\"2557\">docents<\/strong>, sharing historical insights with visitors.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2605\" data-end=\"2769\">In <strong data-start=\"2608\" data-end=\"2616\">1998<\/strong>, we proudly sponsored the newly formed <strong data-start=\"2656\" data-end=\"2732\">Clear Water Harbor Society, Children of the American Revolution (C.A.R.)<\/strong>, welcoming <strong data-start=\"2744\" data-end=\"2766\">29 charter members<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2771\" data-end=\"2804\"><strong data-start=\"2775\" data-end=\"2802\">Ongoing Chapter Support<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2806\" data-end=\"3092\">Our chapter continues to support our <strong data-start=\"2843\" data-end=\"2859\">armed forces<\/strong> by sending <strong data-start=\"2871\" data-end=\"2890\">Christmas cards<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"2895\" data-end=\"2910\">phone cards<\/strong> to service members. We also present <strong data-start=\"2947\" data-end=\"3013\">ROTC awards, chapter scholarships, and Good Citizenship Awards<\/strong>, reinforcing our commitment to education, patriotism, and community service.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3094\" data-end=\"3142\"><strong data-start=\"3098\" data-end=\"3140\">Commitment to Patriotism and Education<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3144\" data-end=\"3435\">In addition to historic preservation, two other core objectives of the <strong data-start=\"3215\" data-end=\"3224\">NSDAR<\/strong> are <strong data-start=\"3229\" data-end=\"3257\">Patriotism and Education<\/strong>. The <strong data-start=\"3263\" data-end=\"3285\">Clearwater Chapter<\/strong> was honored to receive <strong data-start=\"3309\" data-end=\"3359\">the Ellen Hardin Walworth Award for Patriotism<\/strong> at the national level for the contributions of <strong data-start=\"3407\" data-end=\"3432\">Barbara Green and HEP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3437\" data-end=\"3688\">Our chapter actively supports and participates in <strong data-start=\"3487\" data-end=\"3631\">Honor Flights, Vietnam Veterans events, Shoe Boxes for Active Duty, Tampa USO, and Naturalization Ceremonies at the Tampa Federal Courthouse<\/strong>, as well as collaborating with the <strong data-start=\"3667\" data-end=\"3685\">Clearwater SAR<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3690\" data-end=\"4008\">In the area of <strong data-start=\"3705\" data-end=\"3718\">Education<\/strong>, the Clearwater Chapter was nationally recognized for our program on the <strong data-start=\"3792\" data-end=\"3810\">8666 Battalion<\/strong>. We are proud to support <strong data-start=\"3836\" data-end=\"3892\">Clearwater High JROTC, Sea Cadets, and local schools<\/strong>, including <strong data-start=\"3904\" data-end=\"3947\">Ponce de Leon, Shady Lane, and Skycrest Christian School<\/strong>, as well as the <strong data-start=\"3964\" data-end=\"4005\">Clearwater and Largo public libraries<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4010\" data-end=\"4275\">Through these initiatives, the <strong data-start=\"4041\" data-end=\"4063\">Clearwater Chapter<\/strong> continues to honor the <strong data-start=\"4087\" data-end=\"4106\">NSDAR\u2019s mission<\/strong> of <strong data-start=\"4110\" data-end=\"4162\">historic preservation, patriotism, and education<\/strong>, ensuring that the legacy of those who shaped our nation is remembered and celebrated for generations to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Clearwater Chapter, NSDAR The Clearwater Chapter in Pinellas County was organized on April 18, 1932, through the dedicated efforts of our first Regent, Mrs. Samuel Graham Webb, and 15 Charter Members.
