History

The Clearwater Chapter in Pinellas County was organized on April 18, 1932, with the efforts of our first Regent, Mrs. Samuel Graham Webb, and 15 Charter Members. CLWTHIST01 When the downtown Post Office for Clearwater was built in 1933, the cornerstone box contained a list of the Charter Members and current officers of the Clearwater chapter:

        • Regent ~ Mrs. Samuel Graham Webb
        • Vice Regent ~ Mrs. Julius D. Dreher
        • Chaplain ~ Mrs. Newton A. Hamman
        • Recording Secretary ~ Mrs. John S. Wells
        • Corresponding Secretary ~ Mrs. W.E. Campbell
        • Treasurer ~ Mrs. Samuel Mulloy
        • Registrar ~ Mrs. Hamden H. Baskin
        • Historian ~ Mrs. Drury James Gill

One of the most interesting projects of our chapter was the restoration of the oldest log cabin home of the McMullen family. Dedication Ceremonies, held at the cabin on February 22, 1936, established the cabin as one of Pinellas County’s historic landmarks.

During 1976-1978, Mr. and Mrs. Howard Rives furnished the parlor in one of the historical homes that had been moved to the Pinellas County Historical Society’s Heritage Park.

In 1993 our chapter added furnishings to Pinellas County Historical Society’s Heritage Village. Our chapter has continued to support Heritage Village by renewing the parlor, presenting a flag and a new flagpole. Some chapter members volunteered at the park as docents.

In 1998 we were the proud sponsors of the newly formed Clear Water Harbor Society, Children of the American Revolution with 29 charter members.

Our chapter continues to support our armed forces with Christmas cards and phone cards. We give ROTC awards, chapter scholarships and good citizenship awards.

During the years 2008-2014:

        • Regents Ardelle Darling, Ann Neller, and Margaret Christie had members participate in short talks at our meetings, such as the flag, Indian, and National Defense minutes to inform members.
        • Newsletters were sent to members to invite them to programs and to share chapter news and achievements. The chapter went green for the first time when we e-mailed the newsletters, rather than using postage.
        • Christmas cards, gifts, phone cards were given to Veterans.
        • Our annual fashion shows raised money for college student scholarships.
        • For the first time, all the proceeds from the 2014 fashion show went to the Veterans at Bay Pines Hospital.
        • Many ROTC awards were given to honor high school students.
        • Members enjoyed field trips to the Armed Forces Museum, Heritage Village, and Clearwater Marine Aquarium.
        • We strive to use more technology, by holding genealogy and computer workshops and by maintaining a chapter website.
        • To involve more member participation during meetings, we used skits and visits from historical characters to focus on DAR history, founders, and “Mysteries of the Amazing Ladies of History.”
        • Our chapter hosted the Upper Pinellas and Pasco Regents and chapter members for luncheons which featured State Regents Donna C. Cullen and Cynthia Symanek as keynote speakers.
