What We Do

Education

Cora Stickney Harper Chapter, NSDAR, members are passionate about education. We support several Fort Pierce area schools throughout the year. Our members are actively involved in promoting literacy and supporting local libraries through volunteer work, service projects, and book donation. We also support education by recognizing outstanding students at local schools with Junior American Citizen awards and scholarships.

Patriotism

America’s active-duty service members and veterans are important to our chapter. We honor patriotism through projects designed to support our active-duty service members, veterans, and first responders. Each month members visit veterans who reside in local care facilities. Members also bring items to each meeting to be sent to active-duty service members, and each year Cora Stickney Harper Chapter, NSDAR, grants two DAR Junior ROTC medals to students at Fort Pierce Central High School and Fort Pierce Westwood High School.

Each December, the Cora Stickney Harper Chapter, NSDAR, assists with the National Wreaths Across America Day, which is a coordinated wreath-laying activity to remember our nation’s veterans. Our members volunteer their time to unpack, fluff, and place hundreds of wreaths on graves at the White City Cemetery.

Each year we receive Veterans Day and Vietnam Veterans Day Proclamations from the city of Fort Pierce and St. Lucie County.

Cora Stickney Harper Chapter, NSDAR, supports veterans residing in Lynnmoore at Lawnwood Assisted Living Center through maintenance of the library and by providing comfort supplies such as patriotic lap blankets.

We provide home-baked goodies to first responders to show our appreciation and celebrate special dates, such as Patriot’s Day, and to brighten the holidays for those who are working to keep us safe.

Receiving Black History Month Proclamation from city of Fort Pierce, honoring those Patriots of color who supported the cause of American independence.
Receiving Native American Indian Heritage Month Proclamation from city of Fort Pierce, celebrating American Indians and indigenous peoples contributions to the establishment of our great country.

Historic Preservation

Cora Stickney Harper Chapter, NSDAR, has supported preserving our local history since its inception. That tradition continues today through our shared maintenance of three historic sites with historic markers placed there by our chapter in the 1920s, by maintaining gravesites at local cemeteries, and through sponsorship of grants for historic preservation.

We wrote a successful grant for restoration of the exterior of the 1895 Platts/Backus House in downtown Fort Pierce. The win was announced at the Main Street Fort Pierce annual meeting held in the courtyard of Platts/Backus House. Photo courtesy of Main Street Fort Pierce.
